My- Reflection
Session by Wajahat Gardezi Friday January 21, 2006

Wajahat has always been a very good speaker. I have had the privilege to serve the same organization, Wajahat represents today.

He presents to us, the Japanese way of working with strong emphasis on team participation. He also shared some useful experiences at Indus Motors and the philosophy of KAIZEN as practiced there.

My take from the session, apart from learning on training- method, were:

1. Cultural differences do not essentially create friction that ignites fire…… but this friction also generates energy to construct and develop.

2. If we aren’t creating technology (for the time being) let’s adopt it and cultivate upon to have our own blend, perhaps a better one.

Regarding the makeup of the presentation I feel time available to him turned out too short and he had very slim room to play with open hands and mark some real impact on his audience. Could have been better!!

Session by Babar Zia Hashmi Friday January 27, 2006
Team building through cross cultural lens

Exemplary! Lots of learning in such a short session

Initially it seems, he hasn’t been into public speaking before and he is not organized, but once he settled and start delivering it brought great value. Not only the material he carries but the mannerism in his arguments remain inspirational.

I was ignorant on Edward T. Hall, Geert Hofstede, Nancy Adler and Fons Tompenaar, but no more. Now I know the great contributions by each of them, thanks to Baber. A few such sessions and I will own them.

Through the session we were able to better understand ourselves and our cultural hallmarks as a nation on varied parameters such as Power-distance, Hot- Cold behaviors, Masculine- Feminine, Long-term orientation etc. We also learn that how not knowing or caring for Cultural dissimilarities contribute in developing wrong perception and departing relationships.

I must also appreciate the valuable inputs by Mr. Wali Zahid whose facilitation during the session help us understand and assimilate the American accent and apply on local settings.

The session by Mr. Wajahat gardezi was rather dull and soporific. His public speaking skills were apparently unpolished and he sounded like a novice, very honestly it did not really add much to my knowledge and the time would have been utilized much better had Mr. Walee zahid been addressing us. Although some of the examples and personal experiences that he shared with us were interesting but it could not make up for the otherwise boring session I personally feel that he was also incapable to interact with the audience and could not build upon any feed back or comment that he received from us, often when you are addressing an educated audience mere nodding of head does not create much of an impact. I would agree with Shakir that room was too small (you realize this most when you land on the front seat on the day of the guest lecture).

Babar Hashmi’s lecture was interesting and enlightening particularly in terms of new concepts that I gathered from it .I was unfamiliar with most of the names and associated models that he discussed except for Edward T. Hall I had never heard any of the names. I feel that since at an early age Babar has seen almost 26 different nations it has certainly helped him gather a huge sea of profound knowledge and as they say and I believe that traveling teaches you what no book can (only if you can afford it and get the opportunity) . Over all the session can be rated “A” but there were some very obvious short comings that I couldn’t ignore. The session was too technical in some part and I felt that I didn’t have the countenance for most of the jargons that I was being bestowed with.
Since Babar has traveled across so many countries I was expecting few touching stories and personal life examples that could have helped understand the concepts better. In addition to the session being technical I felt that he was using too much of his American wit, I can’t be sure on how most people took the Chinese example (I found it hilarious though). OMG this whole idea of having a guest speaker in every class is getting so interesting I can’t wait to shower more comments.

Hi All

This is Wali Zahid, the person behind creating this insane course on Team Management for MBAs and running it more insanely!

As Hina Baloch says, we have a guest lecturer in each class who comes and shares their ideas.

This is only the beginning. The class is working on something larger-than-life: a project for Pakistan 2030 in 6 chosen sectors. So I am waiting to hear what comes out of these projects!

Also, whatever we do - good or bad, impressive or boring - goes on this site too. Also pioneering for any MBA course in Pakistan!

You want to know more? Wait and keep visiting this site for the next 10 weeks! You won't believe your eyes!!!

My Views

In the very first class I was thinking that I might not get that much info in this class, however, now with the passage of time, at least we are getting somewhere.

In my humble opinion (Naakus raaey ) First Guest Lecturer (Japanese stuff) delivered a good lecture.

However, Mr Baber, kept on reading stuff. I think any one can do so by getting material from net or any other place.
If one has got ample time for a presentation, at leat that should be prepared with slides. If not, then just get the point from the notes and speak on it, DONT Read from the notes.
This is the first lesson taught in the business communication class, that audience loses interest in the speaker if things are read from the notes.

I have lot of things in mind to say, but time has taught me, that most truths are not digested, even though every one knows about it, but once spoken, its not accepted.
Therefore, I am restraining myself for saying lot of things in first go.

However, as the things go on, I will definitely try to give my feedback, if time and life permits :)

Regards

Therefore, I am stopping myself for writing too much.

In the end I will only say, that what I want from this subject is something worth for life

I always believed writing blogs is the most intresting activity but unfortunately not many people from the class think that, this is tragic only five comments from 30+ students in almost five weeks.Esteemed Monsieur Zahid we need to take a notice ,this is heartrending:(......

2330 HRS,
Today another class of TM finished.

Todays Guest lecturer was from Energizer UAE, named Fahad .
My views with my other perosnality answer: (chit/chat)

I thought the lecturer must be some aged person with lots of white hair but !
a young lad without combed hair , torn jean, french beard enters the room
[... Hey Ammar, thats the norms now-a-days, torn jeans, un combed hair is fashion, if u dont do this, it does not mean its not good...]

But , he has come to deliver a lecture or speech, he should be well dressed
[... Shutup Ammar, world dont live as u think, he can come in dhotee and banyaan , whats your problem ...]

He has not delivered anything, rather got the feedback from students, and just spoke on that.

[ ...Ammar it seems, u have some confusion, only you think so, rest of the class was so interactively listening to him and was so indulged in it, may be u have listened and seen such things , thats y it was not of benefit to you , but dont spoil the whole class...]

[...Lastly Ammar, you should mend your ways, only u think in that way, as no other person gives such input, the problem is you dont think positively. Live and Let Live, let all the things happen as they are happening. Keep your mouth Close else ...]

and ,,, another day passes in the life of Ammar

Yesturday's guest lecture i enjoyed more than any other one because the intersting part of Fahad Ashraf's speaking was his way of conveying his ideas, the ideas or rather say his observations in his life. He shared his experience /observation the way i might have shared mine with some true realities about our system/society in a light manner but leaving behind some thoughts...

There are many peope in life who just show off that they are having good value or believe in this or that..blah blah but afew are those whose gestures/tone/way of communication speakes what they really practice. I dont know why but it seemed that muneeb qidwai from pfizer was a show-off...trying to impress everyone rather than delivering out something useful, except one line "companies should have their mission/visiosn and live with it"...n the whole 45 min so-called presentation didnt make any impact. While Wajahat Gardezi shared his experiences but provoked us to think what goes wrong in Pak companies, Babar Zia gave very good information abt the cultures with some technical stuff n Fahad Ashraf made good use of time...involving audience for their input, discarding the usual info that everybody knows n emphasizing gray areas in light manner ... those we all xperience during our informal communication (chichats) n seldom realize to think abt background /personal differences that may hurt someone at the workplace or else.

Salam all'
this is Sumaira, in the last class we went through the exercise of checking each others paper, it was a good experience but when the results were announced I was bit disappointed like others, believing that I should have got more marks and got lost away for a while but then Wali's talk really helped and somewhere between the talk i realized what little importance the whole marks issue has, so thanks Wali; Fahad session was highly interactive and truly involved everybody, (something which was missing in Muneeb's session) I am confused about the discussion on "trust in communication" in that class, also went to Google, search the related topic and got further confused as most of the search says “trust forms the foundation for effective communication” and then further thought about the discussion and concluded that may be because it was written under the heading of "DOs" of communication that is why fahad commented that it does not come under the heading;

Dear Sumaira - On tust in communication. If someone reminds me in the next class, I might have something to offer that may remove confusion about this.

hello everyone :)

i will start off from the first guest speaker session. I liked Mr. Gardezi's topic, he pointed out the differences in Pakistani and Japanese culture and emphasized on KAIZEN. We can improve our system if v start appreciatin lil things by employees/colleagues.It was short, to-the-point and informative.
Mr. Hashmi's topic wuz very interesting, he had too much information which he wanted to share but time wuz limited. However, he tried to convey it but if he wud hav focused on jus one individual's work, it wud hav been easier to grasp. I got really confused in that half an hour.

In Mr Kidwai's session, i didnt learn anythin new...he basically jus shared his experience and emphasized on the importance of knowin our missions! but i did want to ask him what exactly wuz his mission dat took him 13 yrs to figure out?

Mr Ashraf's session wuz very interactive! He entered the room, divided everyone in groups and got everyone involved.. He shared some of his personal experiences and called Pakistanis confused..... How true is dat?

Guests speaker sessions r pretty informative and this is one class in which the teacher didnt ask students to arrange a speaker....

A great suggestion! Why not talk about what we have learnt about team work in the past, in this course, from the course teacher, and through group project? Every bit will be useful, and those offering insight and incisive thought will be more useful. So get started!

Team Management-Course Outline

Course Objectives:

Successful companies are now moving away from command and control management systems that rely on top-down decision making. Organisations are now becoming flatter and team-based, designed to integrate people with diverse backgrounds and different skill sets into a culture that emphasises cross-functional cooperation and personal responsibility for effective group participation. Where teams are highly motivated and self-empowered.

By reconfiguring the teams in this way, companies are recognising the benefits of improving effective response time to clients, innovating within product lines and creating fun workplaces. Most managers and business leaders, however, are inadequately prepared in both skills and understanding of team dynamics.

‘Team Management’ course focuses on developing the understanding and skills managers need to work with and manage teams. Team dynamics, effective communication, leadership style, decision making skills, conflict management and coaching skills will be examined from a variety of perspectives.

The course will help students to understand the different contributions individuals make to teamwork. Student will look at ways of building and motivating successful teams, and consider strategies for managing the processes of communication and decision-making within a team.

Students will be able to evaluate their own skills both as a team leader and a team player.

Students will have the opportunity to design, participate in, and lead a team project at Szabist and at their own workplaces. By incorporating a hands-on approach, each team member will have a significant opportunity to expand their skills by receiving both feedback and insight from the faculty and their peers throughout the various stages of the group process. Deliverables include TV documentary, web publishing, or a booklet.

Because this is a pioneering course at MBA level anywhere, we will experiment with a range of ideas and use a variety of learning and teaching approaches. One thing is certain: this course will give you a definitive competitive edge over others at workplace! And because we need to practice what we teach, this MBA class will need to become a role model of a high-performing team. Both at Szabist and at your own workplace! We will discuss ideas on how we can achieve this in our first session. All crazy ideas are welcome!

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the student will be able to

1 Understand how teams function
2 Appreciate the diversity of individuals within a team
3 Be aware of the risks of poor team management
4 Develop skills and strategies for managing and motivating teams
5 Consider strategies for managing conflict within a team
6 Evaluate and understand your own unique contribution to teamwork
7 Analyse the qualities of effective team leaders

Learning Strategies: Lectures, role plays, movies, small group project, anecdotes, student presentations, guest lectures, peer assessment, reflective journal, debriefs, cases, google

Salam, this is Sumaira, hope everyone is doing well, I have been fortunate enough that I have been working in an organization where there is lot of encouragement to work as a team. This course has been further inspiration to what I have been doing before; I thoroughly enjoyed doing exercises and learned from the sessions about personality style and team roles. I feel that if learned well, it can help us understand our self, people and their roles better in teams and eventually to handle different situation more to our advantage. Now come to the bad part i.e the work on project, I have been working on the job assigned by my team for the project but the speed of work is pity slow; so need to speed up.

hello every one
Hi shakir here I am sorry for such a late entry but I think I have told u the reasons. Never the less firstly I would talk a bit about the class its an amazing experience for me I have been through with number of courses and in different universities never had such an interesting class the good part about this class/course is that Wali makes people do the things not by force. I know he is a good negotiator but still he listens a lot to what class has to say.

Well regarding the guest lectures. I think every one was good. It’s too little time for them to adjust and deliver. But I think most of them did performed an amazing job. Few of them provided loads of information.
For me what ever Wajahat said was not new I wont say that it was of no use but he reminded me a few forgotten things.
On the other hand the lecture by Babar Zia Hashmi was very informative what ever he said was totally new for me.
Well the lecture by Fahad was not of very informative for nothing new was discussed but the style he actually adopted was incredible. He was very causal, finally made the class to think and work as a team.
Overall it’s a good experience. Hope it would continue the same way.

helloo people..
You all must b rockin..!

I would like to ask one question..that why do we always have some sort of activity within those 20 mins allotted for the guest speaker to SPEAK?????????

what is the reason behind that??
they cant carry the given topic or what?

WHAT DO U PEOPLE THINK?

No doubt.. all the activities aer fun doing.. and sessions are fun to be in.. but not upto the level of Masters..

I would like to suggest (if they ever read this).. to prepare more on the topic..else it looks that they just want to kill those 20 mins somehow!

another thing which i have noticed in the last class is that..
it was going very smooth and was informative too..
but the last statement was bit unethical and unproffessional according to me... which was made as an answer to one of the member's question!

I gues i have written alot negative.. that doesnt mean i should go n COMMIT SUICIDE now :) hhhehe..theres always some room for improvement..

all u ppl reading there.. have a nice day!
EnJoY!

Guest Speaker sessions

The idea of guess speaker sessions in every class was great and unique without any iota of doubt as it provided us with opportunity to gain tremendous practical knowledge.
Few of the guest speakers were really great as they talked about real life experiences and showed the other side of the picture too.
The efforts of others should not be overlooked though not much practical but crucial knowledge was brought to the scene pushing us to brainstorm on core issues we never considered as important before.
Fahad Ashraf-- 6th session "communication with and among team members" was tooo good to be praised though his first impression was not tooo good but little lethargic. The energy he demonstrated proved that the first impression was wrong and he talked about the sensitivities we never thought of.
Qasim Usmani from Roche was a little slow as we don’t expect theories from guest speakers. but again he too was good and surely they are nice people to spare their time for us especially when they are not getting anything in return.
Kiran Khan from PIA was the best of her kind as she made us do a unique activity to demonstrate the importance of dependability which is a key to team commitment.
So no doubt guest speaker sessions are great!!!!!

Team Management Class

Team Management's class uptill now that is session 11th has been good as far as covering the course outline is concerned,Sir Wali Zahid has covered each part thoroughly giving us a crystal clear understanding of not only the course topics but our real self plus it enhanced the ability to understand others.
We had great expectations from the teacher right from the first session though i was not interested in this course(as i thought its irrelevant to my area of interest) initially but i was really interested in the way its going to be conducted and the teacher's spirit was realy inspiring that ultimately converted me into the admirer of this course.
Although Sir Wali Zahid did try his best to meet the expectations built in the very first session but one thing that i feel is lacking is motivaton on our part (Despite the fact that we discussed motivation alot during this course)and Im realy missing that feel.so "Sir" u need to work on building motivation.
Moreover I really expected some help in projects from Sir's side such as approving our Questionnaires and few discussions so that we could have produced even better reports that can stand worthwhile for the society. well, lets see what we come up with....
Overall the course was good, the teacher was good and ofcourse we students are also good ;-).
Thanks to Sir Wali Zahid for being considerate about our personal being and telling us what to improve.

In my opinion i think the session conducted by Mr. Fahad from Energizer was the best. Besides i strongly believe that the guest lecturers who come in for a 30 to 45 mins lecture should rather share more of their knowldge and expereinces rather then making us do some activity.
Not tht activities are not a good source to learn something, but spending more then half time on an activity is not fruitful. any activity conducted should not consume much of the time. Fahad did the same thing. he divided us into different groups n made us do an activitiy in our grps which took hardly 5 mins.
and i would also like to mention that the guest speakers, those who have adjusted their timings due to our re scheduling, i really appreciate their efforts, because initially they were been given some other date n timings, and they made themselves available according to our schedule shows their commitment and loyalty.

My Reflection

I still remember the words of Wali Zahid, that he uttered most confidently in the very FIRST session...."We are the Pioneers of the course of Team Management World Wide!!!!!".......and all the students were like..."Huhhhhh????!!! What??? Yeh hum Kahaan Phass gaye !!!??!"

For many of us it was made obligatory to 'Opt' for this course of Team Management.....(As the Industrial Labour Laws course was cancelled)

Many were reluctant to take the course..... including myself.

But today when I look back at all the material covered, all the notions taught in class, all the guest lectures, all the activities and all the assignments, I can say with certainity that this course has really added up alot to my knowledge of 'teams'.

The overall effort of the Instructor is worth mentioning. Praising Wali Zahid here would be like "Suraj ko Chirag dikhaana"....

Some of the guest lectures were terrific, while some were just normal.

The guest speakers should try to avoid Theory and emphasize more on their personal experiences about teams. That would be more productive. Reason being that we have already covered maximum of the theory and hence redundant reference to the same topics makes it monotonous!
